Tutorial: Woven Hearts
This tutorial is for fabric Woven Hearts,
but the pattern can be used for paper hearts too!
Template from ‘Julepynt med Saks og Papir’
Materials
- 2 x Fabrics – front of hearts
- 1 x Fabric – inside of hearts
- Bondaweb (Vliesofix)
- Embroidery Floss – 6 strand (optional)
- Pencil/fabric pen
- Glue (paper & fabric)
- Scissors
- Iron
- Template – Woven Hearts
Preparation
1. Print out Woven Hearts template. N.B I adjusted the size of the template.
2. Prepare your fabric with Bondaweb (Vliesofix).

Woven Heart Preparation
Step 1:
Print out 2 x copies
of the Woven Hearts template.
Step 2:
Cut out all four pieces,
put Set A to the side & glue Set B set together
creating a new template.
N.B Creating a new template will make cutting your fabric
faster & mistake free
Step 3:
Using Set B template
Draw 1 copy onto each of your fabrics
Cut out your fabric shapes.
N.B You should have 2 different coloured pieces
per Woven Heart
Step 5:
Fold and iron
your fabric piece in half
(lengthwise)
Step 6: (optional)
If you plan to embellish your hearts i.e. the edges
This is the time to do it.
I used embroidery floss
to Blanket Stitch over the rounded edges
of my fabric shapes.
Using Set A templates (x2): cut along
the 2 finger folds.
Step 8:
Draw the finger lines onto your
Set B cut-outs.
Cut along your Set B finger lines (x2)
Woven Heart Handles
To make the Woven Heart handles,
I cut a 23cm x 1.5cm strip of fabric from
my (bonded) fabric.
To match my hearts,
I added Blanket Stitch to both side
of the handle.
Assembling the Woven Hearts
Step 1:
a. Take 1L, slide it over 1R
b. Slide 1L through 2R
c. Slide 1L over 3R
Ease your hearts together.
Step 2:
a. Take 2L, slide it through 1R
b. Slide 2L over 2R
c. Slide 2L through 3R
Ease your hearts together.
Step 3:
a. Take 3L, slide it over 1R
b. Slide 3L through 2R
c. Slide 3L over 3R
Gently adjust your Woven hearts so the fingers
Step 4:
To attach the Woven heart handles,
add (fabric) glue to the last 1.5cm of the strip
& gently position inside the heart.
Step 5:
Leave over night to dry.
Step 6:
Hang up for all to see!

Very, very pretty! Shame my other half saw a Christmas craft program recently and said to me very specifically that he didn’t want the house decorated with hearts everywhere (they had a garland of hearts strung across the fireplace!). Maybe he’ll have forgotten about that by next year!!
